Strategic Infrastructure Initiative Gains Momentum
Iraq’s ambitious $17 billion Development Road project is progressing steadily, with advanced negotiations underway and significant design milestones achieved. This mega-project aims to transform Iraq into a pivotal transit hub by connecting the Grand Faw Port in the south to the Turkish border in the north, facilitating trade between Asia and Europe.
The project encompasses the construction of a 1,200-kilometer high-speed rail line and a parallel motorway, traversing 11 Iraqi governorates. The rail network is designed to support speeds of up to 300 km/h, significantly reducing transportation times and costs. Preliminary designs are complete, with final designs expected by 2025.Â
International Collaboration and Economic Impact
The Development Road project is a collaborative effort involving Iraq, Turkey, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. A quadrilateral memorandum of understanding has been signed, underscoring the regional commitment to this transformative initiative.Â
The project is anticipated to generate substantial economic benefits, including the creation of approximately 100,000 jobs and an annual revenue of $4 billion upon completion. It also includes plans for industrial zones along the route and the development of a cargo airport to enhance logistical capabilities.
