Strategic Economic Collaboration Intensifies

Iraq and Iran are actively working to elevate their annual bilateral trade volume to $25 billion, a significant increase from the current levels. This ambitious target underscores the deepening economic ties between the two neighboring countries, focusing on infrastructure development, energy cooperation, and the establishment of joint industrial zones.

Recent discussions in Tehran between Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s advisor, Hazem al-Khalidi, and Iranian officials highlighted key projects aimed at facilitating this trade expansion. Central to these plans is the completion of the Shalamcheh–Basra railway, a 36-kilometer link expected to enhance the movement of goods and passengers between the two nations. Additionally, both countries are exploring the creation of joint free trade and industrial zones along their shared border to foster economic integration and attract investment.

Trade Dynamics and Economic Implications

In the eleven months leading up to mid-February 2025, Iran exported $11.2 billion in non-oil goods to Iraq, including food products, construction materials, manufactured items, and petrochemicals. Natural gas exports also constitute a vital component of this trade relationship.

The proposed increase in trade volume is expected to bolster economic growth, create job opportunities, and enhance regional stability. By strengthening their economic partnership, Iraq and Iran aim to leverage their geographical proximity and complementary markets to mutual advantage.
